Group: National Short description: Old-fashioned, bittersweet, nostalgic. Rhythmic vitality, sensuous melancholy, sly charm and orchestral flair. Facade - first and only modernist work. Assimilated anglican anthems, jazz, and the music of Stravinsky, Sibelius, Ravel and Elgar. Fast moving score full of syncopation and cross-rhythm. Symphony 1 is reminiscent of Sibelius. Viola concerto: despite the common influence of jazz and of the music of Hindemith and Ravel, in its structure and romantic longing it owes much to the Elgar Cello Concerto. Slow worker, painstakingly perfectionist.
