Alexander Glazunov RUS [1865-1936]
Short description: Successfully reconciled nationalism and cosmopolitanism in Russian music. While he was the direct successor to Balakirev nationalism, he tended more towards Borodin epic grandeur while absorbing influences of Rimsky-Korsakov orchestral virtuosity, Tchaikovsky lyricism, Taneyev contrapuntal skill. His weaknesses were a streak of academicism which sometimes overpowered his inspiration and an eclecticism which could sap the ultimate stamp of originality from his music. Younger composers such as Prokofiev and Shostakovich eventually considered his music old-fashioned while also admitting he remained a composer with an imposing reputation and a stabilizing influence in a time of transition and turmoil. Students: Shostakovich.

Bruckner sounds closer to Beethoven (repetitive, simple melodic) and Wagner (large orchestral forces including Wagner tubas, progressive harmonic palette, atmospheric, sense of quasi-religious drama), alghough having dissonances too.

Glazunov sounds more sweeping, wide, russian melodic, sometimes dancing, sometimes dark and slow.

Only Bruckner has vocal.

Only Glazunov has violin concerto. (Bruckner, Glazunov)

Glazunov sounds more sweeping melodic, predictable, russian (although he has finnish fantasia).

Sibelius sounds more unpredictable (melody suddenly breaks or new one begins), dissonant, dark, atmospheric, unearthly, polyphonic, dissonant. Often Sibelius has repetitive back melodies.

Only Glazunov has piece for strings.

Only Sibelius has vocal, piano. (Glazunov, Sibelius)

Easy comparison of two russian composers: late romantic Glazunov and modern Prokofiev.

Glazunov sounds melodic, sweeping, dance.

Prokofiev sounds rhythmic, sardonic, modern, experimental.

Only Prokofiev has piano, vocal. (Glazunov, Prokofiev)

This island seems difficult to me. I would be glad if you add guidelines here. (Brahms, Glazunov)

This is a simple island, but some tracks can be interesting to compare.

Both composers have light music, but Schubert sounds more classical, while Glazunov sounds closer to late romantic.

Only Schubert has piano, vocal, chamber music. (Glazunov, Schubert)

Compare russian composer Glazunov to his russian student Shostakovich.

Only Glazunov has violin concerto in this game.

Only Shostakovich has cello concerto, piano, vocal in this game. (Glazunov, Shostakovich)
