Subhadra Kumari Chauhan was born in Nihalpur village in Allahbad.  In 1919 she married Thakur Laxman Singh of Khandwa. Though a devoted wife and mother she joined the freedom movement and was the first woman Satyagrahi to court arrest in Nagpur.  Her poetic works were highly patriotic and inspiring. Some of her poems are  `Senani Ka Swagat, Veeronka Kaise ho Vasant, her poem Jhansi ki Rani was the most recited poem in Hindi Literature.  She died in a car accident on 15th February 1949.
