Zbigniew Herbert was a polish writer who lived from 1924 to 1998Zbigniew Herbert was born in Poland in 1924. He was a renowned poet and essayist, as well as developing radio dramas and plays. Herbert was an academic man and, at various stages in his life, studied literature, law and philosophy. He contributed to many journals and also had a number of poetry books published in his lifetime. Herbert was outspoken on a number of issues, from being actively involved in the Polish resistance during WWII, to condemning moves to change Poland’s constitution in later years. During his life he received a number of literary awards, including the Nicholaus Lenau Prize in 1965 and the Jerusalem Literature Prize in 1991. He spent most of his life in Poland, although he did spend a few years in France towards to end of his life. He died in Poland in 1998
