Claude Debussy FRA [1862-1918]
Short description: Symbolism. Hazy, sound, wishy-washy, mistical, semi-tones, half-tint, lure. Sound of water: flowing, waves, ocean, rain, lake, river, drops. Sensory component and frequent eschewing of tonality. Non-traditional scales and chromaticism. Glittering passages and webs of figurations which distract from occasional absence of tonality. Parallel chords, bitonality, whole-tone and pentatonic scales. Unprepared modulations, without any harmonic bridge.

Fauré sounds more classical, serious, straight rhythm, predictable.

Debussy sounds more hazy, mistical,

Only Fauré has non-solo piano, requiem (sounds light). (Debussy, Fauré)

Most difficult will be to distinguish Ravel and Debussy on this island.

(See my description for Ravel/Debussy island). (JS Bach, Debussy, Ravel, Sibelius)

Delibes sounds light, graceful, elegant, closer to Tchaikovsky and even Mozart.

Debussy sounds more hazy, mistical, melodic.

Only Debussy has piano (except for Delibes Bolero), string quartet in this game. (Debussy, Delibes)

Very simple comparison of the most known classical Haydn and impressionist Debussy. (Debussy, Haydn)

This is a nice starting island. But some of composers will be harder to guess. (JS Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Glass, Mozart, Pérotin, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, Wagner...)

Ravel sounds more rhythmic, spanish, exotic, energetic, archaic. Ravel can be more melodic and lyrical (Ma mere lOye).

Debussy sounds more hazy, mistical, melodic.

Ravel Miroirs, Daphnis et Chloe sound closer to Debussy.

Debussy Suite Bergamasque, Lisle joyese, String quartet can sound closer to Ravel.

Only Ravel has piano concerto in this game. (Debussy, Ravel)

This island is easy.

Debussy sounds more undetermined and misty.

Massenet sounds more romantic, simple, elegant, old-fashioned.

Massenet has opera and violin concerto (Thais) on this island.

Debussy has opera and different piano, symphonic, chamber, concert works here. (Debussy, Massenet)

This is an interesting island with three composers of different periods.

Debussy is french impressionist with hazy mistical sound.

Rachmaninov is russian post-romantic with simple light melodies, piano bell chords and fast piano textures.

Shostakovich is russian modern with tragic, dissonant, abrupt, fugue, dark sound. (Debussy, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich)

Debussy seems more airy, Bruckner is more grand like Wagner, but also has dissonances and light melodies. (Bruckner, Debussy)
