Arthur Sullivan ENG [1842-1900]
Short description: Comic, conservative musical style, clarity. Trained in the classical style, and contemporary music did not greatly attract him. Used conventional formulae of Auber, Donizetti, Balfe and Schubert. Later drew on Gounod, Bizet, Mendelssohn, while remaining recognisably himself. In the field of harmony remained an eclectic, had easily recognisable habits but his style never achieved individuality. Preferred major keys. Simultaneous presentation of two or more distinct melodies previously heard independently. Exploiting all registers and colours of clarinet, and particular fond for oboe solos. Tunes, at least in the comic operas, appeal to the professional as much as to the layman: his continental contemporaries such as Debussy, Leoncavallo and Saint-Saens held the Savoy operas in high regard. Although his melodies sprang from rhythm, some of his themes may have been prompted by his chosen instrumentation or his harmonic techniques.
