Carl Ruggles USA [1876-1971]
Group: Ultramodern, American Five
Short description: Atonal, firm, coarse, fundamental, principled. Finely crafted pieces using "dissonant counterpoint" (avoiding repeating a pitch class until a generally fixed number such as eight pitch classes intervened). Wrote slowly. Being one of the large 'ALL' islands, this one Still does not seem to be the most difficult, because modern composer differences sound more pronounced than for example Romantic. [All Modern]

Three modern composers. Holst resembles film music. Ruggles writes for orchestra, sounds atonal, fundamental and has long dynamic and pitch waves. Varèse - noisy, microtonal, sonoristic, rhythmic. (Holst, Ruggles, Varèse)
