Last comments for this composer: Rualark 2015-08-12 09:03:53 Rimsky-Korsakov sounds more oriental, spanish, fairy tale.
Rachmaninov sounds more romantic, serious, sweeping, energetic, brutal, sometimes near-impressionism (slow changing textures).
Only Rachmaninov has a capella, piano. (Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov)
Rualark 2015-03-06 09:05:27 1 1 Both composers use folk melodies extensively.
Rimsky-Korsakov sounds more romantic, oriental.
Sibelius sounds more serious, wide.
Beware of Sibelius Valse and Suite, which sound light.
Although only Sibelius has violin concert, Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade can sound like violin concerto sometimes.
I consider this a difficult island and I would be glad if someone posts useful guidelines here. (Rimsky-Korsakov, Sibelius)
Rualark 2015-02-10 22:07:58 Piano pieces go to Rimsky-Korsakov immediately. Rimsky-Korsakov is more russian folklore, whole tone, orientalism. Watch out for some dissonant and broad sections in Rimsky-Korsakov Le Coq, which can unexpectedly sound closer to Bruckner . Bruckner is generally more slow, wide, serious and dramatic. (Bruckner, Rimsky-Korsakov)
