Maurice Ravel FRA [1875-1937]
Group: Folk, Neoclassicism
Short description: Impressionism, modernism, spanish folklore, exoticism, archaism. Clockwork, industrial area, perfectionist. Known especially for his melodies, orchestral and instrumental textures and effects. Synthesist of disparate styles. Applied the aesthetics of the new French school of Chabrier, Satie, and particularly Debussy, rather than atonal Schoenberg. Compositions rely upon modal melodies (dorian, phrygian). Extended harmonies and intricate modulations. Writes in the style of other composers (Gounod, Chabrier, Haydn, Faure). Often masked the sections of his structure with transitions that disguised the beginnings of the motif. Student of Faure.

Saint-Saëns sounds more serious, sweeping or funny (Carnival of Animals).

Ravel sounds more impressionistic, dissonant, avangard, rhythmic, spanish, exotic, energetic, archaic (Le Tombeau de Couperin).

Only Saint-Saëns has organ, cello concerto.

Only Ravel has solo piano, guitar, string quartet. (Ravel, Saint-Saëns)

Most difficult will be to distinguish Ravel and Debussy on this island.

(See my description for Ravel/Debussy island). (JS Bach, Debussy, Ravel, Sibelius)

Compare two french composers: romantic Bizet to impressionist Ravel, both using spanish melodies and rhythms.

Bizet sounds more simple, delightful, sincere, melodic, realistic.

Ravel is impressionist, but is keen for spanish folklore, exoticism, archaism.

Only Ravel has piano, guitar, string quartet in this game. (Bizet, Ravel)

Compare two french composers: late romantic Fauré to his student Ravel (impressionism).

Ravel is impressionist, but is keen for spanish folklore, exoticism, archaism.

Fauré sounds repetitive, more strict.

Only Fauré has piano sonata in this game.

Only Ravel has string quartet, guitar, violin concerto in this game. (Fauré, Ravel)

Bartók = folklore+dissonances. Ravel = beautiful impressionism, modernism. Vocal works may be more difficult to compare, but statistically you are expected to hear Bartók vocal works more often. (Bartók, Ravel)

Bruckner - more serious, slow, polyphonic and dark. Ravel - piano, transparent, rhythmic. (Bruckner, Ravel)
