Alban Berg AUT [1885-1935]
Group: Second Viennese School, Neoclassicism
Short description: Liked Mahler, Strauss. Popular romantic of Schoenberg school. Two sides: lush and branching Mahler-like melodies, nostalgy for sweet sounds and mathematical complexity for complexity.

Being one of the large 'ALL' islands, this one Still does not seem to be the most difficult, because modern composer differences sound more pronounced than for example Romantic. [All Modern]

Berg sounds both more romantic and more atonal.

Hindemith sounds more neoclassical, repetitive, wind instruments.

Only Berg has vocal on this island.

Only Hindemith has sonata on this island. (Berg, Hindemith)

Berg combines Mahler romanticism with Schoenberg 12-tone technique.

Messiaen sounds rhythmic, repetitive, less dissonant, atmospheric, oriental, tonal percussion, bird melodies.

Only Berg has piano+clarinet in this game.

Only Messiaen has organ, piano+other instruments in this game.

Both composers have piano songs.

Use language to guess vocal pieces. (Berg, Messiaen)

Only Schoenberg has string quartet+vocal, sextet (Verklarte Nacht), piano concerto, orchestra pieces in this game. Pierrot Lunaire has characteristic vocal bends. Moses und Aron, Survivor from Warsaw include many german declamations.

Only Berg has string orchestra, violin concerto, clarinet+piano.

Schoenberg is 12-tone except for Guerrlieder Vorspiel in this game. Guerrlieder has a different late-romantic Wagner sound.

Berg combines Mahler romanticism with 12-tone technique.

Berg Lulu and Schoenberg Moses and Aron operas include piano. (Berg, Schoenberg)

Both composers were students of Schoenberg and use 12-tone technique.

Only Webern has piano songs, piano with strings, choir cantatas in this game. Webern melodies are generally more leaping and less romantic. Watch out for Webern Two Early Pieces for Cello and Piano, Im Sommerwind, Langsamer Satz, Passacaglia, which sound very romantic.

Only Berg has clarinet+piano, violin concerto, strings orchestra, opera (Lulu, Wozzek) in this game. Berg combines Mahler romanticism with 12-tone technique. Berg opera resembles both post-romantic and Schoenberg Pierrot Lunaire. (Berg, Webern)

This is an easy island, Shostakovich being much more consonant and Berg being 12-tone and chaotic.

This is interesting, that Shostakovich obviously has some dissonances and this often helps to distinguish him from romantic and post-romantic composers. But on this island he sounds much more consonant.

By the way, comparing Berg to Shostakovich seems more difficult to comparing Webern to Shostakovich, because Berg often sounds more romantic. (Berg, Shostakovich)
